Gynecologic Cancers: What Every Woman Should Know

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month. A CDC fact sheet in Spanish explains the five main gynecologic cancers, their warning signs, and when to see a doctor.

Five main types of cancer affect a woman's reproductive organs: cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, and vulvar cancer. Together they are called gynecologic cancers. A sixth, cancer of the fallopian tubes, is very rare.

Each type has different warning signs. Ovarian cancer in particular is hard to catch early because its symptoms, such as bloating, pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, or needing to urinate often, can look like everyday problems. If a symptom is new for you and lasts two weeks or longer, see a doctor.

The Spanish-language fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), linked below, explains the symptoms and risk factors for each type.

Our Women's Health team provides well-woman exams, Pap tests, and referrals at the San Juan Women's Health Center and our other clinics. Call 956-787-0787 to schedule a visit.
