Peripheral artery disease (PAD) affects 8 to 12 million Americans. It often goes undiagnosed because its symptoms, such as leg cramping while walking or foot wounds that heal slowly, are dismissed as a normal part of aging. South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley have some of the highest rates of diabetes and vascular-related amputation in the United States. Early detection can save a limb.
To help, South Texas Vascular Institute (Prominence Health) is offering free ankle-brachial index (ABI) screenings at our clinics in September. The test is quick and painless. It compares the blood pressure in your ankle with the blood pressure in your arm.
Who should be screened
The screening is for people at the highest risk of PAD:
- Adults 65 and older
- Smokers
- People with diabetes
- People with high blood pressure
- People with high cholesterol
